Convergence – Microsoft discusses its single OS future
Microsoft’s approach to Windows across mobile desktops has been famously fragmented in recent years, with Windows 8’s tablet/desktop hybrid interface more than hinting at an identity crisis. While moves have been made towards reshaping its developer tools around universal apps, there are still questions over what the future holds for Microsoft’s OS.
Following the company’s quarterly earnings call, The Verge reports that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has confirmed that his company will amalgamate all major versions of Windows into a single operating system.
Nadella told analysts Microsoft will “streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system.” Describing the implications of the change, Nadella said “this means one operating system that covers all screen sizes.”
The implications of such a change could be wide reaching and it will be interesting to see whether a more cohesive user interface and development environment emerges from the single team approach over at Microsoft.
